Fattoria Di Sammonata - Primo Fuoco Bianco

Fattoria Di Sammonata - Primo Fuoco Bianco - Italy, 2018

Region: Montelupo Fiorentino, Tuscany
Grape: Trebbiano
Skins: 3 months
Tasting: Orange peel, caramel, mineral

The Fattoria di Sammontana was originally inhabited by monks and used essentially as a retirement home, but underneath a giant cellar and pottery furnace was built as a place to produce terracotta pots. In 1867, the main building, including the furnace and surrounding farm was bought by Michele Dzieduszycki, a Polish nobleman who loved spending his vacations in Tuscany, where he would eventually meet his wife. Their grandson, Massimo, is to thank for directing the farm to excellent wine production that has stayed that way for four generations.

The 13 hectare vineyard is made up of pebbles, stones and gravel - known as ‘ungrateful’ soil, but it is this that gives Fattoria di Sammontana’s wines their character. ‘Primo Fuoco’ is the name given to the initial firing of clay that produces terracotta, harking back to one of the original uses of the winery, and the terracotta amphoras that host the fermentation of the wine.
