Slobodne - Vronski

 Slobodne - Vronski - Slovakia, 2018

Region: Hlohovec region
Grape: Sauvignon Blanc
Skins: 1/3rd macerated for 7 Days
Tasting: Fresh, Peach, Apple

The sisters behind Slobodne are the newest generation of what could be described as almost a Slovakian winemaking dynasty. Their vineyards were originally established 1912, but after years of political unrest around the country, causing the vineyards to be lost twice - first in WW2 and then to the rule of the Communist government - the winery fell into disrepair. In 1997 the now 4th/5th generation reclaimed the farm, replanted the 17 hectare vineyard, reconstructed the cellar and produced their first vintage in 2010 under the name of Slobodne, or ‘freedom’ in Slovak.

Vronski - which's namesake comes from Tolstoy's famous novel 'Anna Karenina', perhaps because you're likely to fall dramatically in love with this wine - is a very refined orange, drinking more like a classical white with only a third of the grapes seeing skin contact for a week. Perfect as an introductory orange and to pair with light and fresh dishes.
